The imposing fortress that dominates the village from the summit of a 900-metre volcanic crag. Almost all entirely restored in recent years, the stronghold can be visited with a 20-minute walk from the village or by car. Worth pointing out in the top part of the village is Palazzo Pretorio, its façade featuring the coats of arms of the Sienese mayors from the Republican era; on the way down the main street through the village are the church of Sant'Agata, with an interesting altar piece attributed to Andrea Della Robbia, and the church of San Pietro, among the most interesting examples of Romanesque-Gothic architecture in the Amiata area.

Trekking and excursions in the countryside are the strong suit of the little hamlet of Contignano, host to the longest pathway in Tuscany: a 5 km-long panoramic path winding through the cretes and ravines, which can also be followed by mountain bike.

Every Tuesday from April to September, thanks to the exclusive partnership between SIENA’S AUTHORIZED GUIDES and the AGRITURIST association, our GUESTS can take part in GUIDED TOURS of the HISTORICAL CENTRE of SIENA, completely free of charge.

In San Casciano dei Bagni you can find tennis courts and a five-a-side football pitch to play the sport you like most, but if all you want to do is relax, we’ll give you a voucher for the Fonteverde Natural Spa Resort.

Horse riding is just 4 km from our holiday complex, at Celle sul Rigo, with riding lessons on request (beginners, intermediate and advanced, English style) and guided treks through the hills and crete senesi, plus the possibility to hire equipment (hats and boots).

A favourite destination for mountain lovers is Monte Amiata, originally a volcano with a wealth of small lakes and springs (presumably giving rise to the name “ad meata” meaning “to the springs”). It’s a massif that extends between the provinces of Grosseto and Siena in the Maremma area of Tuscany. The view from its summit of 1,738 metres is particularly enchanting, embracing not only the spectacular Appennines, but also some islands that are part of the Tuscan archipelago. Monte Amiata is particularly recommended during the winter season for ski lovers. Thanks to its twenty kilometres of slopes for downhill and Nordic skiing and its eight ski lifts, the Amiata is a natural gym for winter sports lovers and families alike. In the midst of the largest beech wood in Europe, the area is one of the ideal places in Tuscany to do downhill skiing, Nordic skiing and snowboarding at professional and amateur levels.

Another stop-off is the highly interesting Pienza, the medieval hamlet with its famous Piazza Pio IX.
